The Region

An interesting website on the Languedoc is www.languedoc-france.info. It contains lots of information on the area's history, geography, climate and places to visit.

Two cheap airlines fly to the South of France from London. Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) flies into Carcassonne's Aeroport de Salvaza (tel: 04 68 71 96 46) from Stansted airport in North London. Some Easyjet (www.easyjet.com) flights to Toulouse (Blagnac aeroport, tel. 05 61 42 44 00) are from Heathrow, Luton and Gatwick airports.

Cars may be hired from Toulouse and Carcassonne and other major centres. It's best to arrange the booking from Australia if possible to avoid quite steep local taxes in France. Diesel cars are cheaper to run. Diesel fuel is called 'gazole' in France and is about 15% less expensive than petrol.
